Artist Ian Cook uses motor vehicles to create giant image of a racing car

Ian Cook has created a giant image of a racing car by combining his two passions – painting and motorsport. So instead of paintbrushes he uses remote control cars, go-karts, a Formula Two car, sportscar and a six-tonne truck.

‘Painting with a six-tonne truck is interesting. The back wheels are twice as wide as the front ones so it’s difficult to see what you’re actually doing,’ said Mr Cook, from Birmingham.

‘If you asked me what my favourite car to paint with is, I would definitely say the Caterham. I’ve always been a motorsport fan and I wanted to be a car designer when I was growing up.’

He even gave up his job as an art teacher in a college to concentrate on his unique way of celebrating his love of motorsport.

He was commissioned by Comma, the motor oil and car care products company, to produce a 50 sq metre painting of a Formula Two car.

His latest ‘painting by wheels’ technique saw him spend 40 hours in the studio working with a remote control car. He then took the huge canvas out to Brands Hatch for a further eight hours of work – where he got in the hot seat of his ‘powerful paintbrushes’.
