Technically, it's known as a draw

Against England.

All you soccer fans.

You'd have to be stupid to actually think there was something idiotic in that headline. I know next to nothing about football and care even less, but even to me the story behind the headline is obvious. It's brilliant, actually, how much they can say with so few words.

I agree with Insolitus; it's a superb headline.

Why do they compare it to Bunker Hill? Did they take away any further victory of the Brit's by that draw?
If that is not the case, then the title still is bollox.

Oh yeah, I see what your saying but I think that makes the headline even more misleading. It wasn't a good game for the USA to begin with, the only reason they even tied it was because of a fluke by the british goalie. It definetly wasn't a moral victory for the USA.

On an entirely pedantic matter, can we stop referring to them as the "British" team or the "British goalie" please. The word you're looking for is "English".

Insolitus said...

Misleading, how? I assume USA was considered an underdog against a traditional football superpower like England. No matter how they managed to reach the tie, it is still quite a victory.

And technically the Mexican team could also be referred to as an American team. The citizens of the UK have too many names for themselves and the people of USA have none. Maybe you could share? :-D

Traditional superpower?? Are you kidding?

England won the WC in 1966 as hosts. Since then, England have only reached the quarter finals twice.

I'm not kidding, I'm just fairly ignorant and apathetic about the subject. Is it a fair assumption that England is at least a football superpower compared to USA, then? At least until recently?

google "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29" To understand where this headline came from.

And trust me, it is amazing in a country where we reject round footballs.

I suspect this is 'Merikan humor. About not expecting to win at all.

Oh FFS, that was 44 years ago. Get over it! Do the English not realise how tired and pathetic it sounds to trot that one out time after time?

The Premier League is far better than the Major Soccer League, though.

"Britain" or "British" is England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

"England" is just England.

Insolitus said...

I know. Still you can call the English British without being wrong or terribly inaccurate.

England reached the semifinal in 1990. Beaten in five quarter finals. My mistake.

From Wikipedia: England did not compete in a World Cup until 1950, in which they were beaten in a 1–0 defeat by the United States, failing to get past the first round.

Haha!
