Baby elephant rescued from marshland in India

A baby elephant found stuck in marshy wetland has been rescued by forest officials and villagers in northeastern India.

Local villager, Lakhan Teron said: "He got stuck in between marshy wetland of the reserve forest. We don't know how long he was stuck, but maybe since this morning." The one-year-old elephant was found in a marshy wetland on the outskirts of Guwahati City. Local villagers called forest officials who came to the baby elephant’s rescue.



Elephant expert, Kausik Baruah said: "He was underwater… and they tried to rescue him but they were not able to. Then with the help of our rescue team we rescued the baby elephant and after that we checked whether he had any injuries but we didn’t find any.”

A huge crowd of locals gathered to watch the rescue. The baby elephant then rejoined its herd and headed back into the forests of the Rani-Garbhanga Reserve.
