Chinese flood victims in dramatic bridge rescue

Emergency services in China staged a dramatic rescue of dozens of people from a bridge, which had partly collapsed under the force of surging floodwaters.

Floods triggered by days of heavy rain brought down a section of the bridge in Yingxiu county, Sichuan Province, making it impossible for workers at a nearby plant to make the journey home.

Initially rescue workers rigged a cable over the swollen river to pull the trapped to safety one by one. However, despite successfully hauling several people to safety, some workers refused to use the cable for fear of falling into the raging river below.

Using their initiative, the remaining trapped workers eventually fetched a large digger from their plant and used its bucket to carry colleagues across the flood waters to safety.
