Man discovers pregnant fiancée is his sister

Two South African lovebirds whose union appeared to be made in heaven were shattered when it was discovered that they were siblings. After five years of courtship, Jabu Ngomane and Thulisile Mhlabane, (not their real names), decided to take their relationship to the next level. They were shocked last Saturday when their families met for lobola negotiations.

The couple are expecting their first child next month. The two met in 2007 at university and fell in love. Their parents separated when the woman was eight months old and the man was two years old. Alfred Ngomane, Jabu's father, said he dumped his wife in 1983 because she was cheating on him. The girl was raised by her mother in Pienaar, outside Nelspruit, while her brother was raised by his father in Madras village in Bushbuckridge. Neither of them knew they had a sibling.



"It was love at first sight," Mhlabane said. "We were studying together at Tshwane University of Technology in Nelspruit. When I first saw him, we connected. We fell in love and since that day, we never looked back. All we wanted to do was just to have a family and many kids," she said. Mhlabane said her mother never mentioned that she had a brother somewhere.

"So you can imagine how shocked we were when they broke the news. We are going to have a child together. We do not know what we will tell him when he grows up," she said. Ngomane said he decided to pay lobola because his partner was carrying his child. The lovebirds said they planned to separate and were discussing a way forward with their separated parents. "We can't think straight at the moment and will just take everything one step at a time," he said.
