Coastguard abseils down cliff to save dog

A trembling dog is rescued by a climber from the foot of a cliff he plunged down. Pet dog Charlie fell over the edge as he was chasing birds while out on a walk with owners Kim and Gary Biberger.

Charlie, a Border Collie, tumbled down the steep cliffs at around 4pm on Sunday, prompting his desperate owners to call 999 for help. He ended up clinging to rocks near the water below Brean Down, Somerset.

Dave Welland from Burnham-on-Sea coastguard cliff rescue team abseiled down to lift the border collie to safety. Relieved Kim, from Wells, Somerset, said: “Charlie ran over the cliff edge while chasing after some low-flying birds.

"It was a heart-stopping moment when we saw him disappear and then to look over the edge and see he was clinging onto the rocks at the bottom of the cliffs just above the sea water. There was no way of safely reaching him so we called 999 and asked for the Coastguard.” Charlie was unhurt. But he now panics if Kim shouts “drop” at him.
