Mother and two children saved after car flipped into swimming pool

Two cars collided in a residential neighbourhood in Southwest Miami-Dade, Florida, sending a mother and her two children aged 6 and 8 inside one of the vehicles careening into a backyard and landing upside down in a swimming pool on Friday afternoon. According to neighbours, the impact sent the three victims' Mazda 3 over two small trees, through a wooden fence and into the pool at a home, just before 3:30pm.

"It was a tremendous accident," said area resident David Taggart. "I heard the big crash; it woke me up." Investigators said a neighbour pulled the woman and her two children out of the inside the overturned sedan. "[He's] very brave, and he doesn't take credit for anything," said homeowner Adolfo Garcia, who is now dealing with the damage left behind. No one was hurt. "I was worried about my kids. A life is a life," Mark Herrera, the children's father, said upon arriving at the scene.

"There were no fatalities, no major injuries, and that's the most important part," said Garcia. Police said the 37-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Acura sedan that was also involved in the crash slammed into the Mazda. She reportedly told authorities she did not see the other car. According to Garcia, the intersection where the crash occurred is prone to traffic accidents, and something must be done about it. "This is a dangerous corner. Everyone [goes through] stops all the time, all the time," he said.

"There are accidents here almost monthly. I usually walk my dog around this corner, and I've almost gotten swiped several times with accidents in this corner," said Taggart. "One side doesn't have a stop sign, and the other guy does." Herrera said he's very grateful his family is safe. "Broke both windows, and I said, 'Wow, it's unbelievable,'" he said. "No stitches, no nothing, just scratches, and I said, 'Oof, thank God.'" Both vehicles were later towed away from the scene. It is unclear whether police will issue a citation regarding the crash.
