Robbery victim told to repay cash

A sub-postmaster left with serious head injuries during a robbery on his post office has said he has been told to pay back some of the stolen cash.

Dilip Karavadra, 42, was hit repeatedly with a crowbar during the raid in Upper Caldecote, Beds, in December last year.

He said he was asked to pay a £3,000 contribution to the £6,695 stolen as he had moved away from an open hatch.

The robbery involved two men, one armed with a piece of wood and the other had a crowbar.

The man with the wood kept watch over the queue of customers while the other went through the parcel hatch into the staff area.

He then hit the postmaster around the head 10 times with the crowbar.

At the time Bedfordshire Police said it was a horrific attack, involving a level of violence rarely seen.

Because Mr Karavadra moved away from the hatch this breached security regulations as it allowed the raiders to jump through.
