It started with the Yuppies, those endlessly aspiring young upwardly mobile professionals who drove fast cars, wore expensive suits, got their hair streaked, bought flats in London's Docklands and tried to make as much money as fast as possible. After that we faced an avalanche of social acronyms to match the times. These included the Buppies, who turned out to be black upwardly mobile professionals. Then the Yuppies married, gave up their Armani suits and Porsches and took to life together. Then they became Dinkies (dual income, no kids) or had children, thus turning themselves into Orchids (one recent child, hideously in debt).
But now a new breed of urban professionals has appeared on the block. Meet the Yuffers: young urban females who typically spend more than they earn, enjoy weekends at country houses or health spas, and who normally have at least two maxed-out credit cards.
According to a survey carried out for the makers of the Vauxhall Tigra, a two-seater convertible, there are millions of Yuffers in the UK. They earn between £25,000 and £35,000 but live the lifestyle of someone on £45,000. Some hold down what is known as 'binge careers' in which they work for intensive six-month periods before taking time off to travel. In addition, they always keep a full set of make-up and gym kit at work. Either way, they never get caught out.
