A woman living in Texas sent her Christmas cards to be recycled on the Isle of Wight, despite being told that any benefits would be wiped out by the environmental costs of sending them 4,000 miles by air across the Atlantic.
The woman, who lives in Fort Worth, contacted the island's council after reading of its recycling scheme on its website.
She sent an email asking whether the council would accept her bundle of 30 cards from last Christmas.
Sarah Buttress, the council's waste minimisation and recycling officer, responded by saying that it might be better for her to recycle locally.
"I left that dilemma with the correspondent but after a week or so, a bundle of her cards arrived for us to recycle," she said.
