Matti Vanhanen narrowly held on to his job as Prime Minister of Finland after an election in which his popularity was unexpectedly boosted by eve-of-poll revelations from a former lover telling how he wooed her with baked potatoes.
The memoir was designed to embarrass Mr Vanhanen but instead sent his personal ratings soaring as his Centre Party fought a close three-way battle for votes with the leftist Social Democrats and conservative National Coalition Party.
The publication of The Prime Minister’s Bride, by Susan Kuronen, 36, a divorcĂ©e who dated Mr Vanhanen, seems only to have added to his appeal. She disclosed that “once after kissing me, he said that I taste even better than an oven-baked potato. That was great.” Mr Vanhanen asked police to investigate whether his former lover’s book violated privacy laws.
