Two different men stole the same car, a Honda Accord, at different times on Friday, leading to separate arrests, according to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.
According to a sheriff's news release, it was stolen near Tieton in the early morning, raced through Terrace Heights just before 11 a.m., then used to elude police who followed it to Yakima where it was abandoned - only to be stolen again shortly thereafter.
A Yakima County detective in an unmarked car first spotted the Accord around 10:45 a.m. as it raced another Accord on Gun Club Road near 41st Street in Terrace Heights. The detective gave chase, losing one of the Hondas when the pair split up.
He followed the other into Yakima where its driver abandoned it near the intersection of East Walnut and Union streets. The detective chased the driver on foot until he kicked in a door at a nearby residence and went inside. Sheriff's personnel and city police found the man, a 21-year-old from Yakima, inside the home.
They also arrested another man, who they say got behind the wheel of the freshly abandoned Accord and re-stole it. That man, a 22-year-old from Sunnyside, also abandoned the vehicle a short distance away after realizing it had a flat tyre, the sheriff's release said.
Authorities are still looking for the other car involved in the Gun Club Road race. That car, a 1991 Honda Accord four-door, has a license plate of 093TLT.
It, too, was reported stolen.
