Bemused supermarket staff told how a mystery man spent 27 hours wandering around their store.
Concerned employees at Asda in Benton, Newcastle, phoned police after they spotted a man acting suspiciously.
Security guards had noticed the shopper had been traipsing through the store for several hours since first coming through the doors at 6.45am on Wednesday.
But after speaking to him, police officers decided that as he had done nothing wrong, there was no reason he should be asked to leave.
Staff shift changes came and went, but still the man remained inside the shop.
It was not until 10am the following day - after a marathon 27-hour supermarket spree - that staff once again called the police about what to do about the mystery man.
This time police told the store they had received a report of a missing man and came to take the man home.
An Asda employee, who did not wish to be named, said: "He was so strange, he just kept wandering around. He would walk up and down the aisles, but didn't have a basket or trolley."
