‘Easy rider’ trip ends in tragedy

Plans for an epic father-and-son motorcycle journey across America ended in tragedy after only 35 miles when a Welsh teenager was struck and killed by a hit-and-run lorry driver.

Cai ap Leslie, 18, from Tregarth, near Bangor, was knocked off his Kawasaki motorcycle as the lorry changed lanes on the Costa Mesa Freeway, outside Los Angeles, on the first day of their planned ten-month, 3,000-mile (4,800km) adventure.

His father, Leslie Kay, 47, rushed back to the scene of the crash but could only cradle his dying son in his arms amid the wreckage. Cai was taken by ambulance to Western Medical Centre, in Santa Ana, but died five hours later.

Police at the scene said that the lorry driver might not even have been aware of the accident.

Father and son had bought new Kawasaki KLR 650cc bikes from a shop in Los Angeles, costing about $5,000 (£2,500) each. Both were wearing helmets and keeping to the speed limit of 60 mph. It is thought that Cai’s motorcycle may have lost power before he was struck.

The family added their voice yesterday to an appeal made by the California Highway Patrol for information to trace the lorry driver.
