Invasion of the tarantulas

Lincoln will be home to more than 1,000 tarantulas in the next few weeks.

Pet shop JC Exotics already has at least 400 of the speck-sized spiders from one successful mating and another batch of 600 plus will soon be hatching to a second tarantula mum.

Staff at the Monks Road shop are now making plans to sell the tiny spiders at just 99p a time.

The hatchlings have to be separated out and 'potted' individually when they are a couple of weeks old, because when they are first hatched they are all clustered together.

Pet shop owner Jim Tweedle has decided to offer the tiny tarantulas for sale at the knock-down price of 99p - the usual price is £3.99.

Most of the brood will be advertised through a particularly apt medium - the web.
