Indian woman kills daughter keen to go to school

A woman in an Indian village killed her 12-year-old daughter because she had been insisting on going to school.

Phusi fell unconscious after her mother Dhapu Devi hit her with a rolling-pin, the Hindustan Times reported. Panicked, she then hung the girl from the ceiling and rushed out of her home, the daily quoted police in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan as saying.

The girl wanted to go to school, but her parents could not afford to buy her a bicycle to cover the seven-km distance to the nearest school, the report said.

"We had to spend Rs 28,000 (about 691 U.S. dollars) on Phusi's birth because her mother developed complications. I have not been able to pay off that debt. How much more could we spend on her? It was not possible to buy her a bicycle," her father Bhaoma Ram was quoted as saying.
