A stubborn stand-off between an irate bus driver and a motorist caused gridlock in a busy Northampton street, as both steadfastly refused to get out of each other's way.
The showdown took place at Riverside industrial estate, and was sparked when the two drivers met head-on half-way down a row of parked cars, with neither apparently leaving space for the other to get past.
Delaying his journey by almost an hour was apparently not an issue for the First bus driver who, according to stunned onlookers, even started to read a novel to pass the time during the wait.
Eyewitness Gary Parnell said: "The driver of the car seemed to have left enough space for the bus to get past, but the bus driver wasn't having any of it and wanted her to reverse. She obviously wasn't going to move, so they both just sat there. For 40 minutes.
"The funniest thing was there were about 20 people on the bus, obviously wanting to go somewhere, and they just sat there as well. Nobody did anything and in the end the bus driver just got his book out and started reading."
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police confirmed officers were called to an incident shortly after 1pm in Fairground Way. She added: "A bus driver was causing an obstruction because he thought he was unable to get through a gap. Police officers were called to the scene and talked to the driver, who then cleared the area. It was established that no criminal offence had been committed."
