Britain's first eyelash transplant carried out

Britain's first eyelash transplant has been performed on a woman in her 30s with alopecia.

Doctors hope the operation will one day be available on the NHS to similar patients.

But the procedure - now popular in the US - could be routinely done by next year to anyone who wants it for cosmetic reasons for an estimated £2,500.

The local anaesthetic technique was carried out on the unnamed patient by Dr Asim Shahmalak, a Manchester-based NHS surgeon who also works for Transform Medical Group.

He admitted: "We have already had inquiries."

But there is one drawback to the op. Because follicles from the neck are used for the one-by-one implants, the lashes keep growing and need regular trimming.
