The Magical Mystery Tour is over – the missing bust of Paul McCartney has been found by a rough sleeper in Reading who mistook it for a Halloween mask. Tramp Anthony Silva discovered the wax head while sleeping by dustbins near Reading railway station last Friday.
Thanks to Anthony, the head will now be auctioned as intended on Sunday and is expected to fetch between £5,000 and £10,000.
The 41-year-old, who has been homeless for three weeks, is now set to get a £2,000 reward for the head’s safe return from owner Joby Carter who left it on a train.
Mr Carter, of the Carters Steam Fair family, left his prized possession in a box while travelling to Maidenhead on the Reading-bound train from London last Thursday.
After Anthony found the auction lot – using it as a pillow for four nights – he jumped the trains to the Abbey Road music studios in London. There he found Mr Carter’s phone number on the internet and emailed him pictures of his find. The mask’s authenticity was then confirmed.
The pair are due to meet in Surrey today where the cheque will be handed over. On Sunday it will take centre stage at an international auction of fairground memorabilia.
