Thief stole police car after arrest

A thief made his getaway in a police patrol car after he was pulled over for speeding. Pc Liam Buttle stopped a Vauxhall Corsa driven by Robert Norris and asked him get into the back of his Volvo.

But Norris, 28, activated the central locking system leaving Pc Buttle unable to get back into his own car, the court was told. Norris then climbed into the driver's seat and drive off with the blue emergency lights flashing.

Paul Hewitt, prosecuting, said: "The officer was left stranded at the roadside but managed to get Norris's name from his passenger who was still in the Corsa. The police car was discovered a short distance away but when Pc Buttle checked it over he noticed the satellite navigation system was missing."

Cardiff magistrates heard Norris had taken the sat-nav so he could find his way to the nearest train station two miles away on foot. Norris was arrested later at his home 40 miles away in Plasmarl, Swansea, south Wales.

Mr Hewitt said: "When he was interviewed he told officers: 'Sorry about the sat-nav but I had to find my way back to the train station.'"

Norris admitted taking a vehicle without consent and theft. He was jailed for a total 12 weeks.
