A bid to allow Christian worshippers to park free in Tewkesbury is set to be blocked for fear of offending other faiths.
The town council and some residents want the borough council to waive charges for church-goers on Sunday mornings in all its car parks.
Borough mayor Coun Brian Calway was chairman of a working group set up to review the town’s parking strategy and fears “politically correct” councillors will block the move.
He said members were against allowing the concession for all Christians in Tewkesbury because they were worried it could be seen as discriminating against followers of other faiths.
He said: “We’re a Christian country. I fail to see anything discriminatory about providing facilities for practitioners of the basic religion of this country. I find it an unreasonable attitude.
“It’s a nonsense to worry about that in a Christian town, we haven’t got any mosques or synagogues.”
