Snooker star handed writ live on TV

Snooker player Mark Selby was handed a writ just seconds before the start of his quarter-final match on live television.

Cameras from BBC Wales and Eurosport captured the moment when Selby was confronted by his former manager George Barmby, who claims the sportsman owes him nearly £14,000.

After Selby, 25, was introduced to the crowd at the Welsh Open in Newport, Barmby wearing a baseball cap, tapped him on the arm and said: 'You are officially served with a writ and a bankruptcy notice'.

'I am issuing you with a statutory demand for £13,985. If you fail to pay within 18 days, I will begin bankruptcy proceedings.'

He then handed Selby an envelope, which went unopened. Security guards quickly escorted Barmby from the venue.

The incident was clearly unsettling for Selby, who is ranked fourth in the world. He ended up losing the quarter-final match against fellow Englishman Anthony Hamilton, 5-3. 'All I could think about was what was in the envelope,' he said.
