Used couch came with built-in cat

A woman who bought a couch at the Spokane Value Village and heard a mysterious “meow” sound wound up finding a cat trapped inside the couch. Vickie Mendenhall said the cat is being called Vee Vee, after Value Village, where she bought the couch for $30 on Feb. 25.

Vee Vee is being kept at Spokanimal to nurse it back to health. Mendenhall doesn't know when Vee Vee got in the couch, but said the cat was in there for at least 12 days without food or water.

Mendenhall heard a meowing sound for almost two weeks inside her home. She has cats, but knew it wasn't one of hers. “I thought it was in the vents or under the house,” said Mendenhall. “It was echoing through the vents.”

It wasn't until Tuesday night when her boyfriend found the source of the mystery cry coming from the couch. “He said there is a cat in there, because he could see her tail,” said Mendenhall. “She was in the arm of the couch, so we cut out the rest and coaxed her out.”

The cat was skinny and parched, but Mendenhall works at Spokanimal, so she took her to the vet. The doctor gave Vee Vee a check up, plenty of food and some fluids to hydrate her.

Mendenhall says Vee Vee is neutered and de-clawed, so she is looking for the owner since Mendenhall can’t keep her because she already has enough pets. She hopes to adopt the cat out if she can't find the owner.
