No applicable charges for desecrating body in funeral home

Albuquerque District Attorney's office said they have several charges they are pursuing against a teen accused of attacking a corpse over the weekend - but harming the corpse is not one of them.

Police allege 17-year-old Dominic Goodmoney broke into a funeral home, removed a female body from refrigeration and used a blunt object to hit the corpse's head and face several times.

The incident started on Sunday morning when police officers said they found a bloodied and uncooperative Goodmoney. In his possession was a cheque from Reflections Funeral and Life Celebrations, credit card receipts and collectors coins.

Officers said they suspected the funeral home had been burglarized. When police arrived at the funeral home, they found broken glass and scattered items - and inside, the worst discovery of all. "Just absolutely desecrated the body of that deceased individual," said John Walsh with the Albuquerque Police Department.

Police said what happened inside the funeral home is beyond disturbing. "This is unspeakable as far as an act is concerned," Walsh said. "In my course of my law enforcement career, I have never seen something of this nature being done."

Police said they believe the body was not someone Goodmoney knew and that he randomly targeted the corpse. There is a law in New Mexico against disturbing a marked burial ground, but in this case the corpse was in the funeral home and that does not appear to be covered under the law.
