Kit worth hundreds of thousands of pounds has gone missing, including at least 235 satellite navigation devices, 81 batons, 57 mobile phones and 141 hats or helmets. The list has prompted charges of carelessness, but police say all major cases are investigated.
Among the items to have gone missing over the last two years is a "murder file", mislaid by the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which also lost nine interview tapes.
Several other forces admitted to losing documents. Norfolk Constabulary mislaid personal data on two occasions. In one case, it was put in the wrong bin and in another it was found in the post box of a children's clinic.
Among the more unusual items stolen were a prayer mat, taken from an Essex Police station, a £45 wheelie bin, taken from Cumbria police, an A to Z of Rochdale, from Greater Manchester Police, and two copies of Nuts magazine, recorded stolen in separate incidents by Devon and Cornwall Police.
The same force also had three teddy bears, make-up and a £1,500 13ft boat and £500 trailer stolen. Its files also list the theft of ice cream, syrup and rolls belonging to the force.
