Sculpture on road causes a stir

Usually it would be an insult to describe an expensive piece of art as a traffic bollard but, in the case of Poole's new Prism, this is exactly what it is. The triangular installation on the roadside in the Penn Hill area town has bemused many residents and outraged others.

Costing £25,000, the granite prism is part of a national pilot scheme designed to introduce original artworks into the traffic system, replacing conventional plastic bollards and barriers. The work, by Simon Watkinson, was unveiled last month and has provoked criticism. Standing at just above waist height, the block of stone is much smaller than many council members had expected.
