Australian senator's Scottish accent can't be understood

A Federal Government senator who speaks with a broad Scottish accent has been accused of being incomprehensible.

Labor senator Doug Cameron was quizzing Industry Minister Kim Carr about the impact of the global recession on Australia's manufacturing sector when he ran into trouble.

Opposition senators heckled that they couldn't understand the former head of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.

Senator Carr leapt to the Scotsman's defence.

"It's a pity the opposition couldn't understand a word of that," Senator Carr thundered.

The opposition benches broke out into laughter at this, with one senator interjecting that he did not speak Gaelic.
