Five hours to rescue guard who shut himself in cash machine

Firefighters cut open a cash dispenser - after a hapless security guard locked himself inside.

He had been topping up the Tesco hole-in-the-wall when the vault's heavy steel door suddenly slammed shut behind him, jamming the lock.

His colleague in their van alerted emergency services - who smashed a glass peep-hole so he could slurp orange juice through a 4ft tube during a five-hour ordeal.

And firefighters had to use five different industrial cutting machines to make a hole big enough for him to crawl through.

An onlooker in Manor Park, East London, said: "They had to cut through several sheets of metal and a set of reinforcing iron bars. They had to keep stopping as the cutters were filling the vault with fumes, and they risked suffocating the guy.
"He looked very relieved when he finally climbed out of there."
