Shocking video released depicting extreme cruelty to baby chicks

Animal welfare group called "Mercy For Animals" has released an undercover video it says shows cruel treatment of chicks at a Siouxland hatchery.

But the company says its procedures are in compliance with industry approved methods. Hy-Line International is the world's largest hatchery for egg-laying breed chicks.

Mercy for Animals says their hidden camera video was taken inside the company's Spencer hatchery, and shows what the group calls cruel treatment and mutilation of the chicks.

Video contains graphic scenes.

The video depicts male chicks being euthanized in a high-speed macerator, it also shows chicks having their beaks trimmed without painkillers, procedures which the American Veterinary Medical Association calls common place and typical.

Meanwhile, Hy-Line officials released a statement saying their number one priority is the care and safety of their birds and employees. They say they'll launch their own investigation into the accusations, and discipline any employees who violate company policies.

The American Veterinary Medical Association sets the standards for humane treatment of animals in these facilities.
