Jackdaw causes havoc in quiet village

He speaks, lands on heads and shoulders, pecks fingers and feet, runs up trouser legs and perches on car wing mirrors, refusing to budge even when the car is moving.

He turns newspaper pages, taps at windows and unpegs washing from the line.

At first Jack, as he has been named, was a source of amusement but now residents of Cromwell, Nottinghamshire, feel under siege. Jack the jackdaw may be small but he has been causing a big headache.

Mr Jeremy Hutchinson, Newark and Sherwood District Council’s environmental health reactive team leader, said: “The council is working with the residents of Cromwell to capture a jackdaw which we believe is an escaped or released pet.

“We’re in the process of tracking down a humane trap to capture the jackdaw, which would then be handed to a resident who has volunteered to take the bird in as a pet.

“The council is not under any obligation to intervene in this case but is happy to help, especially when the bird seems to be making a nuisance of itself.”
