Man seriously hurt in fight over tomato

A dispute over a tomato in South Miami sent a Miami Beach man to the hospital with a broken neck and back and has left police scrambling to identify the attacker.

Robert Lerner, 44, was on his way to the Redland for a photo shoot with his 10-year-old daughter just after 9 a.m. on Jan. 28 when she got a craving for a tomato.

Lerner, driving west on Southwest 288th Street, pulled over in a grove between Southwest 172nd and 177th avenues so she could pick one.

That's when the trouble began. A man, standing five-feet, nine-inches tall and weighing roughly 175 pounds with light-coloured, salt-and-pepper hair pulled up in a dark-coloured Jeep Wrangler and accused the two of stealing his vegetables.

Lerner and the man then argued, which led to a fight. The unidentified man ultimately threw Lerner to the ground, causing fractures to Lerner's neck and spine, before fleeing in the Jeep.

Lerner, who has since been released from the hospital, was able to provide a detailed description of his assailant, which police have used to create a composite sketch.
