A pilot and his 65-year-old passenger have survived with minor injuries after they jumped out of a helicopter and landed in deep snow just before it crashed in southern France.
The 59-year-old pilot had been flying low because of fog on Sunday afternoon and apparently lost control of the aircraft over a mountain side between the towns of Grenoble and Valence, police said on Monday.
He and his female passenger were able to jump out before the machine smashed into the mountainside not far from a ski resort. They landed in about a metre of snow.
The pilot went to look for help and was able to alert rescue services who quickly located the woman, who was suffering from the cold and from back and chest pains but who turned out to be only slightly injured. The pair were hospitalised in the town of Valence. The woman had chartered the helicopter to fly her from the ski resort of Megeve to Valence.
