Mother fined for 13-year-old girl's booze picnic

A mum has been blasted by doctors after sending her 13-year-old daughter on a picnic with a potentially lethal amount of alcohol.

The 37-year-old was slapped with an instant £80 fine after police officers caught the girl with two large bottles of cider, four big bottles of Smirnoff Ice, 12 cans of strong lager and 16 bottles of WKD. She told them she was meeting friends for a picnic in the woods. Her mum, from Blackpool, Lancs, who cannot be identified, was fined for buying the alcohol.

Dr Chris Shorrock, a liver disease expert, said the alcohol could have been fatal, adding: "This is appalling. A child of this age could pass out, someone could have died."

Pc Julie Moreau said: "I hope this is a wake up call to parents. Drinking in a secluded area could make children vulnerable to attack." And local councillor Andrea Kay said the mum should do voluntary work in a hospital to see the damage booze does.
