Canadian demolition site owner not laying blame

The owner of a downtown Vancouver property under scrutiny after YouTube videos captured a botched demolition says he won't comment on what happened until the investigation is complete. The incident made headlines after two videos on YouTube showed two walls of a building under demolition being knocked onto a city street.

The first video shows one wall narrowly missing a car, while the second video shows another wall knocking down a street light pole. The demolition happened on Thursday evening on the southeast corner of Hornby and Helmcken streets. The city and WorkSafe BC are investigating.

Property owner James Schouw said he won't lay blame until he sees the results of the investigation. "I can't say that anybody did something wrong. … I'd like to know if there was any carelessness, but I'm not assuming that for a second," he said.

Schouw said the demolition was done by a company he hired, Global Excavation and Demolition, and he believes all the necessary permits were in place. Schouw said his company will delay taking down a second building on the site until it gets approval from the city and WorkSafe BC.

This has been all over the news here.  Scary stuff!  I hate to think what would have happened had a car driven underneath that lamp standard as it fell over...

Wow, this fails on so many levels.  To begin with, wouldn't you expect all the windows to have been removed before any of the rest of the demolition work even started?
