Rocket ride malfunction leaves ten hanging in air

Ten lives were left hanging by a thread literally when an extreme thrill ride almost ended in tragedy.

Visitors to one of St. Petersburg's amusement parks on Krestovsky Island were in for a nasty shock as a cable snapped on a rocket-like ride, leaving them suspended in mid-air 70 metres above the ground.

Luckily, rescue teams made it to the spot just in time to free those stranded. Two commissions have been set up to investigate the accident. The owners of the amusement park have suggested the break might be due to the extremely hot weather, which softened metal elements.

This is not the first safety scare at the amusement park. Two years ago, a 12-year old girl suffered serious injuries after a trampoline accident, also involving a snapped cable.
