British Gas offered dead woman swimming lessons

British Gas has apologised writing to a dead woman to offer free swimming lessons and say they were "always there for her" five years after her death.

Stella Nesbitt died in 2005 and her son Rick informed the company and asked for her account to be put into his name. But Mr Nesbitt was upset when he received three letters addressed to his mother at his house in Brighton, East Sussex.

One letter said: "At British Gas we're always looking for ways to help you. Here are just some of the ways we are helping to make life simpler."

A British Gas spokesman said: "I am sorry for any distress we have caused Mr Nesbitt. We have investigated the matter fully and have amended our records. We will be checking our procedures to try to make sure this doesn't happen to any other customers."
