Duncan Thomson, 59, of Larchfield Road, Dumfries admitted acting in a threatening and abusive manner. He committed the offence at a house in the town's Lockerbie Road in November.
Dumfries Sheriff Court was told Thomson deeply regretted frightening the woman and had only been looking for a man he thought had gone to the address.
The court heard how he had rung the woman's doorbell and then knocked on an internal door while wearing the Halloween mask.
