13-year-old boy hospitalised for a week after doing push-ups at school as a punishment

The mother of 13-year-old Donell Dixon says he's been at Children's Hospital for 7 days after doing push-ups at his school, The David Ellis Academy in Detroit. Vinyanda Mitchell says it was a punishment for running in the hall and closing lockers and her son had the choice of detention or push-ups, Donell says he did 100.

The Director of the school, Sylvia Green says the coach says it was three sets of 20 and the boys were able to pause in between and drink water. The day after the incident the teen says his arm swelled to double its normal size, so his mother took him to the emergency room.

The medical papers say the diagnosis is Rhabdomyolysis, which is a break down of the muscles, often caused by over exertion. It can lead to kidney problems and blood in the urine and Donell's mother says he has had that.

She says she has talked to a lawyer. The school director says they are devastated and are just hoping Donell will fully recover. His mother of course says she is hoping for the same thing.

Doesn't this show how dangerously out-of-shape today's kids are?

not enough steroid use...

The kid was given a choice--he could have chosen detention. Given the terms of the push-ups, a reasonably healthy boy his age should have had no problem.

Barb, how many 13-year-old boys are going to stop and seriously consider the risks of overexerting themselves? I knew a kid around that age who claimed - and thoroughly believed - that he could easily run a great distance (I forget how many miles). He was very athletic, but that night he couldn't walk. Later we learned he went to the hospital, having torn his legs up so badly that he couldn't walk without severe pain for weeks.

monkey_town, Barbwire has a point. A healthy 13-year-old boy should've been able to complete such a task without ending up in the hospital. 100 push-ups shouldn't have resulted in "overexertion".

Do schools today not even have P.E. anymore?

100 (apparently he only managed 60 - with breaks) should be well within the range of a 13 year old kid.

We are churning out a generation which may be upset when we finally take their rights and freedoms away, but who will be too fat and lazy to get off the couch to do anything about it.

the plan is working :)
