Goose sets up home on lawn chair on second-floor balcony

A Roseville father and son got quite a surprise when they headed outside to enjoy the Minnesota weather. A goose settled on the second-floor balcony at Jabari Barner’s condo and not for a short stay. “So I came out here to investigate and that’s when we saw the goose sitting here,” said Jabari. “We didn’t realize at that point that she was laying eggs.”

Not just one egg, but five. The goose that is now named Madeline is now nesting on Jabari’s lawn chair. “It’s the most random thing I’ve ever seen. All I could say was ‘No way, no way, no way, did this goose lay an egg on my lawn chair?’” he said. While it might not be convenient for Jabari and his 4-year-old son Barak, the second-floor nest will keep away predators from Madeline’s eggs.

She also has company from Jabari — he said any time that he’s at home, Madeline is hanging out on the deck. “She’s my new buddy, I guess, and I guess we’ll have a few more buddies in a few weeks,” he said. “I’m pretty sure this goose recognizes me and my son.”

While mother goose is busy protecting the nest and eggs, father goose has it a little easier hanging out by a nice, cushy pond nearby. Jabari hopes the goslings will be able to find their way, safely off the deck after they hatch. He also doesn’t plan to have Madeline back next year — at least he won’t offer her a nesting place. “These chairs will not be out here next spring. This is one silly goose,” said Jabari.
