Hawk swoops inside New York apartment building

A red-tailed hawk caused a real flap on Sunday by crash landing inside an upper West Side building.

The bird, which flew into the W. 80th St. walkup through an open window, was sitting outside Joe Moderski's apartment when he returned at around 3:30 p.m.

He was checking his mail when suddenly he was startled by the hawk, which had come in on the third floor and had been flying around hallways. "I've never been that close to a hawk," Moderski said. "It's not what you expect to see outside your fifth-floor walkup."

Emergency Service Unit police turned the hawk, which was injured, over to Animal Care & Control workers. "I thought I missed a pillow fight in the hallway or something," Moderski said. "There were feathers everywhere."
