Jesus statue vandalised with red paint draws stampede of worshippers

Hoaxers who poured red paint over a statue of Jesus are being hunted by police after sparking a stampede of worshippers who declared the 'blood' to be a modern miracle. Church goers in Polanka, Poland, had been leaving after mass when they saw a red liquid dripped from the crown of thorns on the statue's head.

Believing it to be a miracle, they set up a vigil outside the church and contacted Catholic authorities to authenticate the holiness of the evidence. But their faith was shaken when priests declared the blood was nothing more sacred than red paint.

Local priest Jan Kutyna said: "We carried out tests and with 100% certainty we can say this is not blood, it is paint. It was clearly the work of some jokers."

One worshipper added: "What kind of sick mind plays a joke like this. They will regret this when they're being judged by the holy man then defaced." But police say the hoaxers now face a more immediate punishment on earth - three years' jail for vandalising a religious statue.

It wasn't too long ago that Poland was Communist, and religion was banned. Now you can get three years in prison for throwing paint on a religious statue. Now that's progress.

Oh, the loving, Christian forgiveness the quoted worshipper just radiates. Exactly what their lord expects of them. Also, I wonder what would be the maximum jail time for vandalising a non-religious statue in Poland. I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than three years. Jesus is the new Lenin.

What sick person would do that?

Maybe a pastor trying to drum up recognition and money for his church?

Sick? Ha! I found the prank quite hilarious, especially the reaction of the gullible religionists. If it didn't involve the possibility of real damage to the statue, I wouldn't have any objections at all. Does that mean I can count myself as a slightly sick person, at least?
