Would-be beer thief soaked in attempted escape through car wash

Three 19-year-olds are facing charges in an alleged beer heist that ended with one suspect covered in soap suds. Andy Huynh, Nicholas Kalscheuer and Nicholas Fiumetto, all of Covina, were arrested on Wednesday on charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, Covina police said.

Kalscheuer and Fiumetto entered the Baja Ranch Market at around 3 p.m., grabbed a 30-pack of Tecate beer and ran out, police said. Employees gave chase and grabbed Kalscheuer, holding him until police arrived. According to a police report, Fiumetto tossed the beer into a car, driven by Huynh, and hopped into the passenger seat.

An employee jumped on the hood as the car careened through the parking lot and eventually struck a kerb. The employee fell and suffered scrapes and bruises. Both suspects ran off. Fiumetto ran through the wash tunnel at the Citrus Car Wash next door and was greeted by officers on the other side.

He was reportedly wet and covered in soap suds. Huynh got away but left his wallet in the car. Officers contacted him and convinced him to surrender. All three suspects were being held on $50,000 bail.
