Desperate hunt for 'trapped cat' in 30-storey tower block due to be blown up

Plans to blow up a 30-storey tower block could be sabotaged by a stray cat. Locals near the landmark Red Road flats in Glasgow have heard the moggy miaowing from the top of the huge block. And one resident, Barry McCulloch, 31, said: “They can’t blow up the building if there’s a poor wee cat in there.

“I’ve heard it miaowing, and I’m sure I saw its eyes when I shone a torch up at the flats. It hasn’t moved from the same area for a few days so I reckon it’s got to be stuck up there. I called the SSPCA and they said they would look into it.”

SSPCA staff are set to visit the site on Monday in a bid to find the cat. A spokeswoman said: “We have received a report that a cat is trapped inside a block of flats in Glasgow which are due to be demolished. We are urgently seeking entry.” Glasgow Housing Association own the tower block in Petershill Drive and plan to have it blown up.

A spokeswoman said: “Our demolition contractors are working on the building and they carry out regular patrols. They searched the block thoroughly but couldn’t find any sign of the cat.” The Red Road flats have dominated the skyline in the north of Glasgow since they were built in 1969. They are being knocked down to make way for new homes.
