Chefs set new world record for building the tallest stack of poppadoms

A curry house in Northampton can now officially lay claim to being a record breaker, after setting a new world best for the tallest ever poppadom tower. A team of four chefs from Tamarind Restaurant in Wellingborough Road spent almost two hours creating the 5ft 8in monster, consisting of a whopping 1,280 poppadoms.

This smashed the previous best by a full six inches and 205 poppadoms. The record attempt, which took place in the kitchens of the restaurant, was witnessed by four independent judges and will now go forward to be officially recognised by Guinness. Tamarind owner Tipu Rahman, who led the record attempt, said: “I am very proud. It was hard work and took a lot of practice but we did it.

“It’s brilliant for the curry industry in Northampton and really puts us on the map. It took a lot of teamwork and there were a few nervy moments but I was always confident. We had practised hard.” The team of four chefs took it in turns to fry the poppadoms, stack them and shape them into a stable tower. Twice the team had to break off to shuffle and reshape the tower when it began to wobble precariously but, undeterred, they kept calm to pass the previous landmark of 5ft 2in.

Mayor of Northampton Roger Conroy was on hand to witness the final poppadom being placed on the tower and said: “It’s brilliant, an absolutely magnificent achievement for both Tipu and for Northampton. We have some excellent restaurants in Northampton who really do their bit for the community and today is a great example of that.”

I'm very impressed by the people who stack stones on beaches and this is just a tasty extension of it. With reference to the Guinness Book of Records.. well, I guess it's good to have qualifications or awards. I guess..

In my line, there's the "British Computer Society" and if (for some reason I've yet to fathom) you give them money every year, you get put MBCS (Member of the British Computer Society) after your name. If I interviewed someone with MBCS after their name they're apparently rich enough that they don't need any job I can give them.

They do look very proud of themselves, don't they!

Many years ago by attending night school paid for by my then employer, somehow or other I became a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

I never did get around to paying for the 'privilege' of putting MCIM after my name.

Poppadoms are thin crispy 'things' served with Indian food.

The word can be spelt in various ways ..

Papadum, pappadam, pappadum, etc.
