Council installed bin seven-feet in the air

Council staff  have been forced to remove a bin after installing it around seven-feet in the air. Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council has removed it – less than 24-hours after it was installed. Peter Price, the council's assistant director for technical services, said: "Clearly a daft mistake has been made.

"It's been put right and we'll make sure it doesn't happen again." Traders could not believe their eyes when the bin was attached to a bus stop sign outside West End Village, in London Road. Gary Challinor, aged 45,  said: "At first when we saw how high up the bin was we thought it was a joke.

"I had to check to make sure it wasn't April Fools' Day. We thought the bin would be moved further down the post eventually, but it just stayed there. One of my colleagues even asked the guy installing it, 'are we going to need a basketball player to chuck our rubbish away for us?'"

Gary lodged a complaint with the council's environmental health department over the height of the bin after seeing pedestrians struggling to dispose of their rubbish. He added: "I just can't believe they would put it up that high, the mouth of the bin is probably seven-feet in the air. That's out of reach for a lot of people. It's funny except that a couple of people have bumped their head on it standing near the bus stop. It's a huge blunder, it can't stay like that because it is useless."
