Council road painters failed to spot missing school

Yellow zig-zag road markings are a common sight outside schools, helping keep pupils safe and roads clear of parked cars. But residents in the Newton area of Chester were left bemused when workmen repainted the markings outside Woodfield Primary School.

That’s because the school closed down in 2008, and was demolished one year later. The bright yellow markings have been painted outside where one of the entrances pupils and parents used to use.

One local resident, who asked not to be named, said: “We wondered what was going on when the workmen turned up. We couldn’t believe it when we came home later on and saw the markings had been redone.

“That road can be busy but I don’t think there is much chance of any pupils crossing it to get to the school anytime soon. It’s a bit of a joke really.” Cheshire West and Chester Council spokeswoman Shirley Wingfield said: “The road markings have been painted by mistake.”
