Audience evacuated after burlesque dancer's flaming nipple tassels set off fire alarms

Hundreds of people fled a Dundee building after a flame-eating burlesque dancer's nipple tassels sparked a fire alert. The act, during the Dundee Tattoo Convention, proved too hot to handle for Abertay Student Union’s fire alarms.

The act Pretty Things Peep Show had been entertaining the crowd with a fire-raising performance. Dancer Go Go Amy had used a variety of pyrotechnics during her act, including fire breathing and flaming tassels. But the show was cut short when smoke activated the venue’s fire alarms and the building had to be evacuated.

Convention organiser Ky Thomasson-Kay said the incident occurred when the dancer blew out the flames. He said: “They weren’t meant to use fire in the act but I think they just completely forgot. When the fire alarm went off everybody had to go outside. It was one of those priceless moments that people will be talking about for years.”

Firefighters were called out to the centre after the alarm was raised and crews were sent to investigate the cause of the incident. Watch Manager Blair Fletcher said crews quickly established that the call had been a false alarm. He said: “I understand the acts were using fire breathing and pyrotechnics so that is what looks to have started the fire alarm.”
