Council workers praised for handing in £62,000 they found under carpet during house clear-up

Two council workers have discovered £62,460 in cash under a carpet while clearing the home of a deceased social housing tenant in the Alphington area of Exeter.

Exeter City Council's Steve Yeo and Chris Lawrence have been praised for their honesty and integrity after immediately taking the money back to the council's offices.

The cash, which was stashed in a number of envelopes, is currently being kept in a safe while the council tries to track down the former tenant's next of kin.

Council leader Pete Edwards said: "This was a really large sum of money which could very easily have gone undetected, but Steve and Chris found it and did the right thing. Of course we expect high standards of honesty from council employees, but it's a great pleasure to know they behaved with such integrity."
