City centre tree is being 'killed by passive smoking'

A tree could be dying from passive smoking because so many people light up next to it. Shop and hotel workers meet to smoke at the whitebeam tree, on Portland Street in Manchester city centre.

But over the past few months, it has started looking unhealthy, with wilting leaves and flaking bark. Experts who were brought in to investigate believe the deluge of cigarette butts and ash flicked into its base could be to blame.

Red Rose Forest spokesman Jane Alcock, said: “The only thing different about this tree was that the soil around it was totally clogged up with cigarette butts. Business owners have been trying to clear them up each day, but with more being added constantly it’s a real struggle.

“This tree is in considerably poorer condition than the others in the street, so we believe the cigarette butts could be to blame. It’s a sobering sight to see a tree near to death because of smoking.” A bin for cigarette butts has now been place near the tree and smokers are being urged to use it.

I'm an ex-smoker, 10 years this month and I understand the desire to help people to quit but a tree dying from cigarette butts? Bollocks!

What's more likely is that it's in a city, surrounded by paved ground and thus doesn't get enough water. Tobacco is just leaves, it composts just like every other plant material.

It harms your cause when you have to resort to hyperbole and lies.

Yeah, that's the reason it's dying.

Stupid cow.

It may be damaged by the products of incomplete combustion (cyanide, semi volatile organic tars, etc) leached from the discarded filters,

But it isn't dying of second hand smoke. It's dying from littering. Also, it's planted in a sidewalk. It's not got a great habitat in the first place, and that might be impacting its growth, defintely worth considering before jumping to an absurd conclusion which sounds like a result of selection bias rather than science.

And to whomever said "stupid cow" in a comment above, stop being a bigger ass than the people you're whinging about.

Well said, anon 2, especially about the "stupid cow" comment. Perhaps one day he'll grown up and behave like a man. Hopefully.
