Exploding airbed put man in hospital and left hole in roof of block of flats

A man was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after the airbed he was inflating exploded and blew off part of his roof. Neighbours told how the block of flats shook and cracks appeared in their ceilings when 53-year-old Kenny McAdam’s bed burst.

The force of the explosion in the top-floor flat blew tiles from the roof and shattered a skylight window, sending glass and debris down on to the street. Emergency services were called to the scene in Alexandria, west Dunbartonshire, at 11am and Kenny was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Wendy Morrison, 41, who lives below the victim and his partner Lynn, 49, said: “I thought I was going to die. Everything shook and went flying everywhere. I didn’t know what was going on so I just ran into the street. I was shaking. There was a lot of broken glass and tiles off the roof.

“Kenny was taken away by ambulance. He didn’t look too well but I think it was just shock.” Drinkers at the nearby Old Vale Bar said they heard the blast. A member of staff said: “We thought there had been a gas explosion.” Police confirmed Kenny had escaped injury. A spokesman added: “The airbed had a fault and the built-in compressor has burst and exploded.”
